Treatment of fungal nail infections with Nitrofungin - reviews and instructions

Release forms

Nitrofungin from different manufacturers

The original Nitrofungin is produced in the Czech Republic. Not so long ago, an Israeli analogue from Teva appeared on the market. Both drugs are produced in glass bottles of 25 ml. A medicine with a similar trade name is Nitrofungin Neo. It differs from the usual solution in its composition. The Neo form is produced in glass bottles of 25 ml, as well as in the form of a spray - 30 ml.

Pharmaceutical composition

A solution of Nitrofungin in 1% consistency is an easy-to-use liquid. It has a slight yellow tint and an alcoholic odor characteristic of drugs. 1 mg of the finished product contains at least 10 mg of active chloronitrophenol.

The solution is packaged in small glass bottles made of tinted glass. The capacity of each is 25 ml. Additionally, the kit includes a special dispensing pipette and a locking ring on the neck that protects the bottle from accidental opening. The cardboard packaging contains detailed instructions for the solution and reliably protects from direct rays.

Chloronitrophenol dissolves best in alcohols, so additional components of the solution include: pure ethanol, water and triethylene glycol. Due to the high alcohol content, Nitrofungin can retain its antifungal properties for up to five years (subject to storage standards).

Active substance

Nitrofungin from the manufacturer IVAX

The active component of Nitrofungin is a substance with disinfectant properties – chloronitrophenol. This is a derivative of phenol, which took over its volatility, characteristic odor and ability to penetrate the skin. The solution has a color from yellow to yellow-green.

The active component of Nitrofungin Neo is tridecanamine undecylinate. It is a modified form of undecylic acid that is used in many antifungal drugs. The solution is transparent, pale yellow, with a faint alcoholic odor. The active ingredient is not absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream.

Pharmacological properties

Nitrofungin solution is active against the main fungi that affect the skin - epidermo- and trichophytons, the causative agent of microsporia, candidobacteria.
In low concentrations, it inhibits the growth and reproduction of fungi and exhibits fungistatic (suppresses division) properties. Increased concentrations have a detrimental effect not only on fungi, but also on bacteria. After application to the skin, the drug creates active concentrations in its surface layers. When used on large areas and inflamed areas, it partially penetrates into the systemic bloodstream.

Nitrofungin Neo exhibits only fungistatic properties. The active substance creates conditions unsuitable for the proliferation of fungi and the formation of colonies.

conclusions

This is an inexpensive and reliable remedy that is effective against many types of fungi and yeast. Chloronitrophenol, which is part of the drug, depending on the concentration, makes the solution an effective antimycotic and antibacterial agent.

The drug is prescribed for the treatment of a variety of fungal infections of the skin of the nails, including mycoses of the feet and nails, candidiasis and lesions of the ear canal caused by fungi.

Nitrofungin has a number of undesirable side effects and contraindications for use, therefore, when treating fungus with this remedy, consultation and observation of a dermatologist is recommended. If used incorrectly, including significantly exceeding the dosage, the harm caused by the drug may outweigh its potential benefit.

We reviewed the instructions for Nitrofungin.

Indications

Ringworm is a fungal disease

Nitrofungin and Nitrofungin Neo are intended for the treatment of skin mycoses. They help with epidermophytosis, trichophytosis, candidiasis, and rubromycosis on the feet. Due to the presence of alcohol in the composition, they can be used for mixed infections supported by opportunistic microflora. Nitrofungin can be used for inguinal athlete's foot, but avoid applying the drug directly to the mucous membranes.

Doctors often prescribe both forms of Nitrofungin for fungal infections of the feet and skin between the toes. The solution form and alcohol allow the active components to penetrate the rough surface layer of the dermis.

These remedies also treat ear fungus – otomycosis. Solutions can be used when only the outer part of the hearing aid is infected.

As part of self-medication, Nitrofungin is used for onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the nails. There is no mention of this disease in the instructions. Consequently, the solution is not intended for treating skin appendages.

Nail fungus is not included in the list of indications for Nitrofungin

Side effects

Judging by the reviews, Nitrofungin can provoke local adverse reactions - allergic manifestations, irritation, dry skin due to intolerance to the drug or high concentration of the solution.

If the product gets inside, nausea, increased sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, depression, acidosis, hemolysis, cyanosis may occur. In this case, the urine turns green. For internal use of chlornitrophenol, gastric lavage with a solution with vegetable oil and intake of activated carbon are indicated.

Directions for use and doses

Treatment with Nitrfungin for fungal infections of the auditory organs

Regular Nitrofungin and the Neo form are used only externally.

  1. The solutions are applied to the affected areas of the skin in drops and rubbed with your fingers.
  2. The second treatment option is to apply the product to a small ball of cotton wool and then to the skin.
  3. To treat the ear, you should use a cotton or gauze swab. The solution can only be applied to the sink - under no circumstances should it be buried inside.

Nitrofungin Neo is used for ear tamponade - a small tampon soaked in the medicine is placed in the affected ear. After some time it is removed. The manipulation is repeated 2 times a day - morning and evening.

The medicine is applied after hygiene procedures

Nitrofungin Neo and regular are applied to areas of the skin affected by fungal infection 2-3 times a day. Treatment is continued for 3-4 weeks, although improvement is observed already 3 days after the start of therapy. For recurrent mycoses, the drug is used for 6 weeks in a row, even after the symptoms have completely disappeared, in order to completely destroy the fungus. For preventive purposes, Nitrofungin is applied 2-3 times a week for 2-3 weeks. Treatment of otomycosis lasts 14-21 days, under the supervision of a doctor.

People with sensitive skin or an active phase of inflammation at the site of the fungus should dilute the drug by half with water.

pharmachologic effect

Nitrofungin has an antifungal effect at the local level; the ingredients of the drug do not penetrate into the bloodstream, which minimizes the occurrence of adverse reactions.

The active substance of the drug has a fungicidal effect, preventing the proliferation of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The principle of action of the solution is based on the ability of the drug to destroy the cell membrane of pathogenic organisms and prevent the synthesis of ergosterol, the main enzyme that is necessary for the active growth of fungi.

Nitrofungin has a fungicidal effect

The main advantage of Nitrofungin is its antibacterial effect on pathogenic microflora, so it can be used to treat fungal and bacterial infections. Additionally, the solution has anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties.

Instructions for use

Nitrofungin is used topically; detailed instructions for the treatment of various pathologies are indicated in the annotation for the drug. The solution should not be applied to mucous membranes.

Nitrofungin for lichen and fungal diseases

For mycosis, onychomycosis, ringworm and pityriasis versicolor, soak a cotton pad with the product, treat the inflamed areas, and carry out the procedure every 8-12 hours. The skin should be clean and dry, it is better to make a soda bath for the nails, and trim the affected areas.

Soak a cotton swab in the solution and apply to the affected areas

Therapy should be carried out until the manifestation of the disease is completely eliminated, after which Nitrofungin should be used once every 3-4 days for 1-1.5 months - this will help avoid relapse of the pathology. Treated areas must be protected from exposure to ultraviolet radiation. If the liquid gets on healthy areas, they should be washed with warm water and lubricated with any vegetable oil.

How to use Nitrofungin to treat ears

If the external auditory canal is affected by fungus, Nitrofungin can be used in two ways - instill the solution into the ear, or make compresses.

How to instill Nitrofungin:

  1. Clean the ear with special drops or hydrogen peroxide.
  2. Remove remaining liquid with cotton pads.
  3. Hold the bottle of Nitrofungin in your palms for a bit so that the solution warms up.
  4. Lie on your side, place 1-3 drops in each ear, and cover with cotton wool.
  5. Carry out the procedure three times a day until the unpleasant symptoms are completely eliminated. Improvement is usually seen after 3–5 days.
  6. To prevent relapse, the solution should be instilled three times a week for a month.

Nitrofungin can be instilled into the ears

For a compress, you need to moisten sterile cotton wool with Nitrofungin, place it in the ear canal, and leave until the solution dries completely. Carry out the procedure three times a day until complete healing.

If the eardrum is damaged, the solution cannot be instilled.

Treatment of sore throat with Nitrofungin

For chronic tonsillitis, Nitrofungin can be used to gargle - dilute 110 ml of solution with an equal amount of warm water. The procedure is carried out every 6–8 hours, use the entire portion of the medicine at a time. Duration of therapy is 5–7 days.

This method of treatment belongs to unconventional methods of combating sore throat; you should first consult a doctor and be sure to take antibacterial medications.

During a sore throat, rinse your mouth with Nitrofungin

A spray can be used to treat children over two years of age. The solution is recommended only for patients over 15 years of age.

Contraindications and side effects

The main contraindications are individual intolerance, hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. Reviews

Stervochka

“A fungus appeared on the feet, the doctor prescribed Nitrofungin. I used the product twice a day, but after 5 days it didn’t get better. I bought Clotrimazole ointment, it’s cheaper and works very quickly. Within a week, all the unpleasant symptoms disappeared, and within a month, healthy nails were almost completely restored.”

Sokollova

“I have been using Nitrofungin for more than 5 years. First, he helped me get rid of ear canal fungus in 5 days - I dripped 2 drops into my ears three times a day. Then I bought this solution for my husband’s nail fungus – it took a long time to treat, almost 2 months. Now I use the product for prevention - I lubricate my feet and nails twice a week.”

Zabiyaka_ya

“I bought beautiful silver bracelets at the market, but after a few days the skin under them began to turn red, small blisters appeared, and unbearable itching. The doctor said it was contact dermatitis and recommended Nitrofungin. I lubricated the affected areas three times a day, after 4 days all unpleasant symptoms disappeared. Disadvantage: the skin has turned yellow.”

Overdose

When used correctly, an overdose is unlikely. The phenomenon is excluded during treatment with Nitrofungin Neo. A regular drug can cause an overdose if it is applied to large, inflamed or injured areas of the skin or if it is done too often.

An overdose is indicated by:

  • nausea;
  • vomit;
  • clouding of consciousness;
  • overexcitement followed by fainting.

Phenol derivatives are excreted through the kidneys, so the patient’s urine becomes green in color. Severely exceeding the dose is fraught with respiratory depression, heart and kidney failure. Ingestion of the drug poses a direct threat to life.

Advantages and disadvantages of the product

Like any medicine, Nitrofungin has its pros and cons.

The advantages of the drug include low cost (about 300 rubles for one 25 ml bottle), fast and effective therapeutic effect (the first changes are noticeable after two to three days of use), a wide range of applications (suitable for the treatment of a variety of mycotic diseases of the skin and nails, has an antibacterial effect), the ability to apply the product under cosmetic varnish in the treatment of onychomycosis.

The disadvantages of the medicine are the small volume and inconvenient shape of the bottle, the strong drying effect caused by ethanol in the composition of the drug, staining the skin and nails in a persistent yellow color. This, unfortunately, is not stated in the instructions. We will consider reviews of Nitrofungin further.

Pregnancy and lactation

Any medications for a pregnant woman must be prescribed by a doctor.

Nitrofungin is prescribed with caution to pregnant and lactating women. A specialist should choose the product. Nitrofungin Neo has an advantage, since there is no risk of its absorption into the bloodstream.

Regular Nitrofungin is not advisable to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Although if there is an urgent need, the doctor can advise it. In this case, the specialist evaluates the balance of benefit for the mother and risk for the child. Nursing mothers should ensure that the treated skin areas do not come into contact with the baby's skin. Children's dermis absorbs chemicals very well, so there is a risk of a negative effect of the drug on the child's health.

Price

Prices for medicines vary significantly within the state and even within the same city. The cost of each medicine depends on the pricing policy of the pharmacy chain and many other factors. Czech Nitrofungin solution costs 280-340 rubles. The price of the Israeli counterpart is in a similar range. Nitrofungin Neo can cost 300-400 rubles. It is very rare in domestic pharmacies.

Different forms are in approximately the same price category
