Gel Metrogyl Denta: composition

As we said earlier, Metrogyl Denta ointment has a pronounced antimicrobial effect , this feature is due to its composition, which includes:

  • Metronidachol benzoate is an antibacterial active component of the drug, which, penetrating into saliva, creates a powerful bactericidal barrier.
  • A solution of chlorhexidine digluconate (20%) is a powerful antiseptic that is effective against protozoa: the herpes virus and various bacteria, and it is also worth noting that it does not lose its activity in the presence of pus.
  • As for the excipients, these include: corbomer-940, propylene cliuol, sodium hydroxide, sodium saccharinate, disodium edetate, levomenthol and water.

  1. cheilitis;
  2. periodontitis;
  3. gingivitis in any form;
  4. candidal and aphthous stomatitis;
  5. inflammatory processes of the oral mucosa;
  6. complications when wearing dentures and braces;

Metrogyl Denta ointment cannot cure standard types of diseases such as stomatitis; this point is indicated in the instructions for the drug. The fact is that ordinary stomatitis is caused by viral organisms, and the drug does not contain components that could overcome viruses. Herpetic stomatitis is better treated in other ways. For allergic stomatitis, it is also useless to use Metrogyl Denta.

Important! You cannot prescribe an ointment for yourself to get rid of unpleasant symptoms; you should definitely visit a dentist to find out the cause of the inflammation.

Main contraindications to the use of ointment:

  1. individual intolerance to the components of the composition;
  2. age up to 6 years.

Metrogyl Denta is a safe drug, so the list of contraindications consists of only two conditions. It can also be used by pregnant (after the first trimester) and lactating women, but after consulting a doctor.

Instructions for use

Metrogyl Denta medicinal ointment for gums should be used in accordance with the instructions, depending on the problem that has arisen:

  • for periodontitis, the gel should be used after removing tartar and dirt, treating the pockets and all gums with a thin layer 2 times a day for two weeks;
  • in case of aphthous stomatitis, the ointment should be applied to the affected areas of the mucous membrane 2 times a day for a week;
  • inflammation of the gums - in this case, you need to apply a thin layer of ointment to the outer and inner surfaces, using a clean finger or a cotton swab. Repeat the procedure twice a day, in a course of 10 days;
  • for chronic periodontitis, it is necessary to carry out preventive courses twice a year, apply ointment to the gums twice a day for a week;
  • after tooth extraction or after treatment in which the gum was cut or injured, as a preventive measure, apply a thin layer of ointment to the affected area 3 times a day.

The compatibility of Metrogyl Denta gel with other medications is one hundred percent, provided that the gel is used strictly according to the instructions. Doctors do not recommend using the ointment together with coumarin anticoagulants, phenobarbital and disulfiram.

After application, Metrogyl Denta acts by reducing the growth of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. These microorganisms, through their active reproduction, cause pathological conditions in the oral cavity. Metronidazole and chlorhexidine are able to penetrate the very DNA of pathogenic organisms and destroy them from the inside. The drug is able to disinfect the oral mucosa, while preventing the appearance of new bacteria and infections.

The principle of action of the drug

If bleeding gums, pain or ulcers appear in the oral cavity, then it is necessary to use a drug whose action is aimed at eliminating pathogenic microorganisms. In case of inflammatory process on the gums, the use of ointment should be used only with an integrated approach to treatment. Inflammation of the gums occurs as a result of the appearance of plaque, as well as hard sub- and supragingival deposits on the teeth. Before using the ointment, it is recommended to have dental plaque removed at the dentist. After this, the dentist will prescribe complex therapy, including the use of antiseptic rinses and gel. In case of severe inflammation, systemic antibacterial therapy is also used.

Note! When using Metrogyl Dent without brushing your teeth to remove plaque and tartar, the effect will be noticeable only for a short time.

With temporary improvement without professional cleaning, there may be a decrease in bleeding and swelling of the gums. In this case, the inflammatory process will continue to develop, but asymptomatically. As a result, this can lead to gradual destruction of the bone around the teeth.

Indications for the use of Metrogyl Denta gel are the following diseases:

  • acute and chronic periodontitis;
  • gingivitis;
  • cheilitis (inflammation of the lips);
  • bacterial aphthous stomatitis;
  • alveolitis of the hole after tooth extraction;
  • inflammation of the mucous membrane under the installed prosthesis;
  • inflammation of the hood located above the wisdom tooth;
  • periodontitis or periodontal abscess.

Metrogyl Denta: advantages and disadvantages

It is worth noting that Metrogyl Denta gel is one of the first antimicrobial medications that were presented to the public in Russia. Its undeniable advantage is that it can be purchased in any domestic pharmacy at a fairly affordable price. However, it is also worth adding that it is effectively inferior to a large number of more modern means.

The advantages of Metrogyl Denta ointment include:

  1. good antimicrobial activity;
  2. Fixes quite well on the mucous membranes of the oral cavity;
  3. Quite affordable price.

As for the disadvantages, they include:

  1. the medicine does not have an analgesic effect;
  2. the concentration of active components is less than required according to effective therapeutic dosages. Actually, this is the reason for the relative harmlessness of the drug when used uncontrolled and its moderate effectiveness.

The two active components of Metrogyl Denta (chlorhexidine and metronidazole) have effective antimicrobial properties because they are active against pathogenic microorganisms. However, these components do not tend to have an anti-inflammatory effect, the essence of which is to block inflammatory mediators in tissues.

When treating inflammation of the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, it is much more effective to use drugs or combinations thereof that have a combined effect.

Analogs

Today on the shelves of pharmacies you can find a large number of drugs with similar effects. Metrogyl Denta gel has an absolute analogue - Asepta ointment, with the same active ingredients, but at a higher cost.

Similar drugs that, if necessary, can replace Metrogyl Denta Ointment:

  • Cholisal is a gel with antimicrobial and analgesic effects. Has a higher cost;
  • Rotokan is an extract consisting of natural herbs and ethyl alcohol. This drug has an antiseptic effect, kills germs;
  • Metrodent gel is a complete analogue of Metrogyl Denta ointment;
  • Parodium gel – the active substance is chlorhexidine, the gel has an antimicrobial effect;
  • Dicloran Denta - contains diclofenac, which provides an analgesic effect that is not found in Metrogyl Denta ointment. For diseases with pain, it would be advisable to replace Metrogyl gel with Dicloran. This analogue has a large list of contraindications and side effects from use, so you need to be extremely careful when using this drug on your own;
  • Dentamet is a domestically produced ointment intended for the treatment of various dental pathologies. Active ingredients: chlorhexidine, metronidazole. It is used for the following diseases: oral infections, periodontitis, gingivitis, pulpitis, etc. This is a direct analogue of Metrogyl Denta gel with a lower price.

Gel Metrogyl Denta: pharmacological action

The ointment has an active effect against bacteria and viruses that have a detrimental effect on the periodontal condition. It is worth noting that the use of the ointment does not affect the activity of lactobacilli, but the activity of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria is suppressed.

The active components of the drug react with anaerobic DNA microorganisms and protozoa, as a result of which the synthesis of nucleic acids is suppressed, which leads to their death. The combination of chlorhexide and metronidazole promotes active and effective inhibition of the activity of anaerobic bacteria.

During the studies, particular activity was noted against yeast spores.

Metrogyl Denta gel effectively disinfects and cleanses the oral cavity, providing an antiseptic effect. When the drug is used topically, its absorption is minimal. The concentration of active components in the gel is not so high as to have a systemic effect on the entire human body.

Metrogil and Metrogil Denta, what is the difference

Metrogyl and Metrogyl Denta are two completely different drugs:

  1. Metrogyl Denta is a dental ointment used for topical use in the oral cavity for inflammation and other dental diseases;
  2. Metrogyl is a drug available in the form of an injection solution, ointment, and tablets. Used in the treatment of infectious diseases and gynecological diseases: bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis. Contains metronidazole. Metrogyl ointment is used intravaginally.

Both ointments have antibacterial properties and contain metranidazole, but are used in different areas.
