Livarol candles: unique composition
If you start treatment at the initial stage, the disease can be effectively and quickly cured. As a rule, at the first symptoms of thrush, doctors recommend using Livarol. The suppositories contain ketoconazole. It has a destructive effect on fungi. The medicine also contains other excipients that make the composition of the drug unique.
Composition of Livarol:
- Ketoconazole (40 milligrams);
- Polyethylene oxide (400 and 1500 milligrams);
- Butyloxyanisole.
pharmachologic effect
An antifungal drug from the group of imidazoledioxolane derivatives for topical use. It has a fungicidal and fungistatic effect, the mechanism of which is to inhibit the biosynthesis of ergosterol and change the lipid composition of the fungal membrane.
Active against dermatophytes (Trichophyton spp., Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum spp.) and yeast (Candida spp., Pityrosporum spp.).
Also active against Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp.
When is Livarol used for thrush?
Livarol suppositories are used not only to treat thrush, but also for other diseases:
- with disturbed vaginal microflora (most often this happens during pregnancy);
- with a chronic form of candidiasis that recurs;
- for chronic and acute mycosis.
Livarol suppositories can also be used for prophylactic purposes to prevent thrush. They can increase the effectiveness of drugs during antibiotic therapy. Candles can be prescribed to a woman who has suffered an infectious disease when her immune system is weakened. In such a situation, Livarol helps prevent candidiasis.
Side effects and overdose during treatment with Livarol
In general, Livarol adapts imperceptibly in the body, but exacerbation of side effects is also possible. Such anomalies are extremely rare, but in case of relapses they are accompanied by mild digestive disorders in the form of nausea and dizziness. In addition, allergic manifestations, expressed by a skin rash with an itchy “effect,” are possible. There is also a burning sensation at the site of direct contact with Livarol suppositories.
There is no evidence of an overdose of Livarol.
Contraindications to the use of the drug for thrush
Like all medications whose action is aimed at treating fungal diseases, Livarol has contraindications. But there are very few of them. In quite rare cases, a woman may have an individual intolerance to ketoconazole. Therefore, she may have an allergic reaction after taking the medicine. In this situation, you must stop using the drug.
Suppositories should not be used:
- girls under 12 years old;
- while breastfeeding.
There are cases when gynecologists prescribe suppositories during pregnancy, but only 12 weeks after conception. During this period, the child’s important vital organs are already fully formed.
Adverse reactions of the drug:
- mild itching in the vagina;
- minor irritation of the vaginal mucosa;
- hives;
- Vomiting and dizziness rarely occur;
- in rare cases, pink discharge appears.
If at least one of the side symptoms bothers you, you should immediately stop using the product and consult a doctor. He will prescribe other medications that can cure thrush.
Features of the use of the drug Livarol
The use of Livarol suppositories can lead to an allergic reaction in a sexual partner. In addition, you should not use condoms and diaphragms during treatment, since Livarol significantly suppresses their contraceptive effect. Therefore, complete abstinence from sexual intercourse is recommended for the period of treatment. Parallel treatment of a partner is also appropriate.
The use of Livarol in adolescence has not been studied.
There are also some nuances in the drug interaction of Livarol with other pharmacological groups. Thus, the combined use of Livarol with rifampicin and isoniazid reduces the concentration of ketoconazole in plasma. But we can say that ketoconazole in “duets” with indirect anticoagulants, cyclosporine and methylprednisolone can increase the concentration of the latter in plasma.
The effectiveness of suppositories for thrush
The unique composition includes a unique substance – ketoconazole. Its peculiarity is that it has fungicidal properties and kills pathogenic fungi of the Candida family. It also has fungostatic properties that help stop the rapid development of infection.
This substance can not only destroy Candida fungi, but also fights dermatophytoses that provoke fungal diseases. Ketoconazole stops the increased production of ergosterol. Ketoconazole is also effective against streptococci and staphylococci.
Composition and properties of the drug
The active component of the drug is ketoconazole. Thanks to this substance, the medication destroys fungal infections and is used for candidiasis in women. Livarol also contains auxiliary components:
- butyloxyanisole;
- polyethylene oxide
The product is available in the form of suppositories. After administration, the medication gradually dissolves, and the vaginal walls are coated with the drug. The effect of Livarol for thrush is noted at the cellular level. In this case, the estrosterol connection is disrupted, the surface layer of cells is destroyed and fungi are exterminated.
It is worth noting that ketoconazole has a detrimental effect only on pathogenic microorganisms. Ergosterol, which is part of healthy cells, remains intact.
Livarol suppositories for thrush have two main properties:
- fungastatic. Helps stop the reproduction and growth of pathogenic microorganisms;
- funcidic. The causative agent of the disease is completely destroyed.
How to use?
Candles are very easy to use. In order to remove the suppository from the package, you need to lightly pull both edges at once. It is better to administer the drug while lying down and as deeply as possible. It is recommended to use suppositories before bedtime (the mixture will not leak out of the vagina). Suppositories dissolve and turn into a medicinal mass.
All recommendations for using the product must be followed. They are described in detail in the instructions. It is advisable to use 1 suppository per day. The course of therapy depends on the form and stage of thrush, so the duration of the course of treatment is determined by the doctor.
If candidiasis is chronic, treatment can last from 5 to 10 days. It should be remembered that during pregnancy and lactation you cannot start using Livarol on your own. A consultation with a gynecologist is required.
Mode of application
To obtain the necessary therapeutic effect when using suppositories, you should follow the recommendations of your gynecologist.
- The suppositories must be inserted deep into the vagina while lying down. The horizontal position of the body must be maintained for 1-2 hours for deep penetration of the active substance into the tissue. It is advisable to carry out the procedure before bedtime to reduce the amount of substance leaking from the vaginal cavity. In the acute form of the disease, the course of treatment is designed for 3-5 days (one suppository per day). In case of relapses, as well as in the case of a chronic form of the disease, suppositories are used for up to 7-10 days.
- If it is impossible to carry out the procedure at night, Livarol is used together with daily sanitary pads to prevent contamination of underwear with the medicinal substance. Neglecting the rules for using suppositories significantly reduces the effectiveness of the medicine. Otherwise, they switch to using drugs in tablet form (Ketoconazole, Clotrimazole and others).
- If the prescribed treatment coincides with the beginning of the menstrual cycle, Livarol suppositories continue to be used without interruption according to the established scheme. In some cases, the doctor may prescribe a longer course of treatment with Livarol (usually 2-3 days longer). If there is no clinical effect, further use of suppositories is discussed with the attending physician.
- During the period of using Livarol, maintain proper sexual hygiene. You should avoid using cosmetics with an alkaline effect to avoid increased itching and burning in the intimate area.
- During treatment with Livarol, it is advisable to abstain from sexual activity until the signs of the disease are completely eliminated. During sexual intercourse, the vaginal mucosa is additionally injured, increasing the risk of a long-term inflammatory process. Infection of a sexual partner with a fungus during coitus occurs in 80% of cases.
- Fungal disease should be treated by both sexual partners at the same time, even in the absence of clinical manifestations in the man. Neglect of this rule increases the likelihood of recurrence of the disease and transition to a chronic form. A man can use an antifungal cream or ointment to treat the head of the penis 2 times a day and additionally during intimacy. Such drugs as Clotrimazole, Ketoconazole, Nizoral, Mycozoral, Sebozol have a similar effect. Using a condom reduces the likelihood of infection of a partner with a fungus, but the mechanical impact of latex injures the wound surface of the vagina.
Is it possible to overdose?
Unusual reactions are possible - this is the case if a woman is self-medicating or the dosage of the drug taken is exceeded. A woman may feel a burning sensation, itching, and observe redness and rash in the genital area. Such obvious symptoms can be easily detected by a doctor during an examination. If adverse reactions are confirmed, it is necessary to replace the drug. Livarol should be used under the supervision of a gynecologist, only then will a woman be able to completely cure thrush without any harm to the body.
Overdose or improper use
Lavirol suppositories for thrush have not been studied in cases of overdose. But in practice there were no such situations. Undesirable reactions are possible if they are not used according to instructions, that is, more than once a day. Then there may be unpleasant sensations in the form of itching, burning in the vaginal area, slight redness or rash. All this can be detected by a gynecologist during a routine examination. If this happens, you should change the drug.
Suppositories should be used under the supervision of a doctor. Only under strict control can you completely recover from thrush without harming your health.
Additional information about the drug
You need to carefully choose the place where the candles will be stored. It is better to leave the drug in a dry, dark, cool place that is inaccessible to children. Alcohol does not affect the strength of the drug. In some cases, if thrush is not chronic, suppositories can be used during menstruation.
Of course, Livarol suppositories are an effective remedy for candidiasis, but we must not forget that self-medication is prohibited, especially during pregnancy and lactation.

Advantages of candles
Livarol suppositories are especially effective against thrush because:
- They are made on a soft base, so they spread very smoothly over the vaginal mucosa. Thanks to this, the active substance is distributed evenly;
- Suppositories are able to wash out pathological discharge and do not dry out the mucous membrane in the vagina;
- Using suppositories for treatment is much more convenient than vaginal tablets. They are easier to administer and do not need to be moistened with water before use.
Indications
Indications for the use of Livarol are as follows.
- Treatment of fungal vaginal infection. Used for acute and chronic forms as part of monotherapy and combination regimens.
- Prevention of mycoses during the use of drugs. Refers to those that disrupt the normal vaginal microflora (for example, antibiotics) and can provoke vaginal candidiasis and gardnerellosis.
- Complex treatment of cervical erosion. To prevent complications from therapy and for rehabilitation.
Pregnancy and lactation
The drug is used intravaginally and has a local effect on the body. Therefore, Livarol should not be prescribed during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. Ketoconazole can inhibit the production of sex hormones in the fetus, and this is a risk of negative impact on the process of its formation.
In the second and third trimesters, the drug is used with caution if the expected benefit to the expectant mother is higher than the possible risk to the child.
During lactation, Livarol suppositories can be used, but it is better to do this as prescribed by a doctor. The drug practically does not penetrate into milk, so during treatment you can adhere to the usual breastfeeding regimen.
